Free Crochet Pattern: Holiday Ornament Tawashi

This versatile little scrubber is super quick to whip up at a moment’s notice for Secret Santa gift exchanges, or for simply cleaning around the house.

This festive holiday ball ornament scrubbers can be used to wash dishes, clean your face, act as coasters, or be strung into a garland. Each tawashi can be worked up in less than half an hour, using only small amounts of cotton yarn, making them ideal as last minute gifts!

Materials

  • Main Color cotton yarn (MC)—blue, green, red
  • Contrasting Color cotton yarn (CC)—yellow or grey
  • H hook
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

Gauge is not important

Abbreviations [US]

  • CH—Chain stitch
  • SLST—Slip stitch
  • SC—Single crochet
  • HDC—Half double crochet
  • INC—Two HDCs in one stitch
  • DEC—Decrease over two stitches
  • FO—Fasten off
  • * *—Asterisks denote a section of stitches that must be repeated throughout the round, e.g. *SC in the next stitch, INC in the next stitch* means to make a SC in the first stitch and an increase in the next stitch. The stitches are then repeated for the entire round.

Special Stitches

The DEC is a standard SC decrease.

Step 1: To work the DEC in this pattern, insert hook into stitch, YO and pull through. There are now two loops on your hook.
Step 2: Insert hook into next stitch, YO and pull through. There are now three loops on your hook.
Step 3: To complete the DEC, YO and pull through all 3 loops on hook.

Ball Ornament Pattern

Ornament is worked in joined rounds. Do not turn between rows.

Round 1: With MC yarn, make a magic loop and add another CH. 10 HDC in magic loop. Join with a SLST into first stitch of round and CH 2. Do not turn. (10 stitches)

Round 2: *INC*. Repeat pattern between * * nine more times. Join round with a SLST into first stitch of round and CH 2. Do not turn. (20 stitches)

Round 3: *HDC in first stitch, INC in second stitch*. Repeat pattern between * * nine more times. Join round with a SLST into first stitch of round and turn and CH 2. Do not turn. (30 stitches)

Round 4: *HDC in first stitch, HDC in second stitch, INC in third stitch*. Repeat pattern between * * nine more times. Join round with a SLST into first stitch of round and FO. (40 stitches)

Weave in all ends before progressing to next part.

Hanging Cap Pattern

The hanging cap is worked back and forth in rows.

Row 1: With CC yarn and right side facing forward, count 17 stitches moving counter clockwise from where you fastened off in main section. Join yarn in 18th stitch and CH 1.

SC in same stitch that you just attached yarn. Make one SC in each of the next 4 stitches. CH 1 and turn. (5 stitches).

Row 2: With wrong side facing forward, DEC over first and second stitches, SC in third stitch, DEC over fourth and fifth stitches. Ch 1 and turn. (3 stitches)

Row 3: With right side facing forward, SLST into first stitch, SLST into second stitch. CH 20 and SLST back into last worked stitch (2nd stitch of row), being careful not to twist chains. SLST into third stitch.

FO and weave in ends.

    I was just wondering on the free crochet Holiday ornament tawash —it Hanging cap pattern.is there supposed to be; row1, row2, row2, and then row 3. Or row 1, row2, row3,and then row4 ! If it is the 2 one why is there two rows of number 2? Or was the first #2 supposed to go with row 1? Donna Yeoman thank you for the answer!
