Free Crochet Pattern: Sunflower Tawashi

In celebration of Earth Day, here is a free sunflower tawashi pattern. These little guys are great for using as a face scrubber/makeup remover cloth, or as a dish cleaner. Using only small amounts of cotton yarn, the pattern is useful for stash-busting and last minute gifts.

Materials

  • Small amounts of worsted weight cotton yarn, like Lily Sugar 'n Cream, Bernat Handicrafter Cotton, and/or Peaches & Creme
  • US G/4.0 mm hook (or US H/5.0 mm if you find it difficult to complete stitches)
  • Yarn Needle

Abbreviations [US]

  • CH—Chain stitch
  • SC—Single crochet
  • DC—Double Crochet
  • TR—Treble Crochet
  • INC—Increase by making 2 SC in one stitch
  • SL ST—Slip stitch
  • * *—Asterisks denote a section of stitches that must be repeated throughout the round, e.g. *SC in the next stitch, INC in the next stitch* means to make a SC in the first stitch and an increase in the next stitch. The stitches are then repeated for the entire round.
  • [ ]—Brackets indicate that stitches must be worked together in one stitch

Gauge

Gauge is not important

Yellow Sunflower

This tawashi is slightly easier than the pink version, because it doesn't have any turning between rows. All rows are worked with right side facing forward.

Both tawashi are worked in rounds, not spirals.

With Color A (Brown)

Begin with a magic loop, or other preferred method of starting in the round.

Round 1: 6 SC in a magic circle. Join with a SL ST and CH 1. (6 stitches)
Round 2: INC in same stitch as SL ST. *INC in next stitch*. Repeat between * * 4 more times. Join with a SL ST to first stitch of round and CH 1. (12 SC)
Round 3: SC in same stitch as SL ST, then INC in next stitch. *SC in next stitch, INC in next stitch*. Repeat between * * 4 more times. Join with a SL ST to first stitch of round and fasten off. (18 stitches)

With Color B (Pink)

Round 4: With right side facing, attach new yarn in same stitch that was joined with a SL ST and fastened off. CH 1 and SC in same stitch as the newly attached yarn, then SC in next stitch, and INC in next stitch. *SC in next stitch, SC in next stitch, and INC in next stitch*. Repeat between * * 4 more times. Join with a SL ST to first stitch of round and fasten off. (24 stitches)

With Color C (Yellow)

Round 5: With right side facing, attach new yarn in same stitch that was joined with a SL ST and fastened off. CH 1 and SC in same stitch as the newly attached yarn. In the next stitch [DC, TR, DC in one stitch]. * SC in next stitch, then in the next stitch [DC, TR, DC in one stitch]*. Repeat between * * 4 more times. (36 stitches)
Round 6: SL ST into the last stitch just completed (it will be the DC/TR/DC stitch). CH 8-12 stitches for the hanging loop and SL ST into the base of the first stitch of the round.

Fasten off and weave in any loose ends.
